Choosing a sleeping bag and sleeping mat

A sleeping bag works with your mat, dry clothing and shelter. Your own sensitivity to cold matters too. Do not choose only by weight or the lowest temperature printed on the label.

Understand the temperature labels

Distinguish the manufacturer's comfort, limit and extreme figures. Plan around comfort and the expected overnight conditions; an extreme rating is not a comfortable sleeping target. Ratings aid comparison rather than guaranteeing the same experience for everyone. Allow a margin if you sleep cold or conditions are uncertain.

Compare the complete system

Assess down and synthetic options by actual weight, packed size, care needs and likely moisture. Check length, shoulder space, hood and zip. Your feet should not be compressed.

A warm bag cannot reliably compensate for inadequate ground insulation. Check your mat's insulation, valves and repair options. For indoor accommodation, confirm the required bedding before packing. Protect the bag against moisture in transit, then dry and store it as directed. A trial with the complete sleep system can reveal fit problems before departure.
